What are the things you carry every day? In the literal sense and non.

BELLA: I wish I could take a picture of my bag for this question to give you a better idea of what a complete and total shitshow my purses always are. But the following things are almost always on me: my passport, a tube of Aquaphor, some sort of Chapstick (I have about six tins of Bigelow's Rosebud Salve rolling around in the bottom of bags right now), chewing gum to keep me from biting my nails, my phone, my keys, a set of headphones, sunnies, loose change, ibuprofen, and usually whatever I'm reading at the moment travels with me. Right now, I'm carrying around The Goldfinch by Donna Tartt and it's starting to give me shoulder problems because it's so damned thick.

SUKI: I read that book! Or most of it. I gave up eventually.

BELLA:I just started it! It's been on my shelf for a year or so and I finally dove into it. It's good so far! I think I'm really only on chapter two but I like what I've read. I like her other novels, and this one got all of those awards, so I'm hoping it finishes strong. OR, that I can at least finish it.

SUKI: You have to get to the part where he makes friends with the Australian Russian dude. He was my favourite. Spoiler alert.

BELLA: As for the non-tangible shit I carry with me, I'd say I carry around the weight of not wanting to let my dad down a lot. I'm the youngest, and the only who's left Melbourne. I carry memories of my mum, the good ones, because I find the tragic-lost-a-parent-so-young story to be a bit old and tired, and it makes people uncomfortable. It's easier to carry happy bits, they weigh less.

(I am thoroughly impressed by her ability to not be as shallow as i am.)

What makes you uncomfortable? Alternatively, what makes you feel comfortable?

BELLA: When people mistreat their children in public, that makes me so uncomfortable. Whether they're yelling, or yanking, I always cringe and wonder if I'm on one of those social justice hidden camera shows, and someone's waiting for me to tell this mum that she's a total whack and needs to shape up before someone sends the government to her house for being a cunt to her kids. Water parks. Feeling as though I've overshared with someone who wasn't ready for me to share that much with them. Being put on the spot to sing, dance, or play. I have to be able to prepare mentally before I can do anything noteworthy. And the seethru Lulu Lemon pants on the woman who always stands in front of me at yoga.

SUKI: I understand that feeling of oversharing so much. It's the worst.

bella: Especially when the person you've overshared with is just silent in return, staring blankly at you like you're a weirdo, and then they don't share anything.

suki: I know! You're vomiting your personal truths everywhere, and you get nothing back.

bella: That's my biggest fear, is that I finish unloading all of this on someone and they're like, "Oh, that's cool."

bella: Things that make me feel comfortable are: good friends, luxe leisure wear, the beach, the smell of the ocean, hearing an Australian accent, somewhere between six and ten pillows, two drinks, and three hits of a joint.

suki: So many exact numbers, do you have relaxation OCD?

bella: I do, I'm weird that I have to have things just so for me to be relaxed. I'm very particular about the small stuff. It drives people bonkers.

suki: you're a gemini, right? my siblings are all geminis. geminis are very meticulous.

bella: yes, that's one of our greatest and most loathed traits.

Do you consider yourself an introvert or an extrovert? Why or why not? Would you ever want to change it?

bella:i think i'm a bit of both when it comes down to it, which might be a washy answer, but for me, it holds true. i'm outgoing to a certain point, with the right people, when i feel comfortable. it takes a little bit of work to get me there though. it took a lot of practise for me to get to a place where i can do an interview (the irony), or press for something, and feel like i'm comfortable being myself. (and i owe that to three women who helped me so much when i first moved to los angeles, and first had to do a big press tour: rose byrne, helena bonham carter, and eva green. namedropping my mentors and heroes for a good cause.) but i need a lot of time to recharge. i like time alone. i need a certain amount of time to be able to reflect after a big event, or a big gathering. i'm happy to be by myself all day, but not all day every day. so i'd say i'm both. but when i first got started, i did always wish i'd been a little bit more of an extrovert. it just seems like natural born extroverts have it easier when it comes to learning the ropes of show business.

suki: I think you probably have the opposite problem I do, where you come off as quiet and a bit reserved so people don't know that you're actually lots of fun. Especially in a cryogenic chamber.

bella: I am loads of fun in a cryogenic chamber, freezing my literal tits off. People just don't know that about me until they get to know me.

suki: that's alright though, you've got to keep a bit of mystery. save some stuff for the special people. I think most people are both introverted and extroverted, like the way most people are probably bisexual but some people are more attuned to it than others.

bella: yes, i think most people are ... i'm about to make a terrible pun ... shades of grey. I hate myself.

What was the first song you heard by your favorite band? Do you remember where you were when you heard it? How old were you?

bella: beast of burden, by the rolling stones. i feel like sort've a poseur saying that my favourite band is the rolling stones, because i was never a die hard fan growing up. you know those cool girls who listen to the smiths at 14? i was kylie minogue and spice girl-ing round my day school. i was probably 17 or 18 when i finally started stealing all of my dad's old records. but that's the first song i ever heard by them, because my mum and dad used to sing it to me when i was a tike, to get me to sleep. also filed under inappropriate songs my parents used to sing to me as lullabies: layla by eric clapton, since i've been loving you by led zeppelin, and dirty deeds done dirt cheep by ac/dc. i wasn't old enough to remember hearing it for the first time, as heathcote legend would have it. i was a stones fan in the womb, it just took me 20 years to remember it.

suki: I also love the Stones. Mick's daughter has been my friend since we were thirteen.

bella: Yes! Georgia. I remember thinking that when while seeing them last year, "Why didn't I call Suki for this?"

suki: I'm so gross.

bella: You are pristine.

bella: it began quietly and unexpectedly, and lasted for five years.

suki: wow.

bella: i stunned you, i can tell.

suki: i like that, it's like the first sentence of a novel where you'd want to read more.

Cynefin (n.) a place where a person or an animal feels it ought to live and belong; it is where nature around you feels right and welcoming. What's your cynefin?

bella: my cynefin is melbourne. i've become more comfortable in la than i ever thought i would - but melbourne is still home. specifically my childhood home. my dad still lives there, just a few blocks from the water. my brother just moved out last year, now he lives a few streets over. you can smell the salt water, you can jog down to the beach, you can encounter a few hundred ways to die any time you step outside the front door. it's home. My other cynefin is bed.

suki I like that Australia keeps it real about the likelihood of death.

bella: when we were doing the video thing last night, marcus mumford said, "i like that in australia, if you touch the wrong tree, you can die." iMMEDIATE KINSHIP.

suki: you have to respect a country like that.

bella: it weeds out the pussies.

You feel the need to escape, hypothetically speaking, and to do so you choose to live in the woods for three months by yourself. Make a packing list. What would you bring to survive? Remember, you are in the woods for three months.

bella: let's pretend i'm going on a vacation that's not in the woods, because three months in the woods sounds like hell. for my three month vacation in an undisclosed airbnb location that is NOT the woods, i'd pack: a handful of notebooks and pens, enough candles to last me for three months - i'm big on candles - a lifetime supply of chips, a small library, my favourite pillow, some way to play music (if i say portable record player and records it makes me look like a twat, and if i say my laptop, then am i really 'escaping'?), my guitar, a camera, the fake polaroid one, a bathing suit, probably too many clothes, and a map. i think i'd get bored of anywhere after three months. i need a contingency plan/escape route.

suki: Oh you adapted it, I like that.

bella: My woods answer would have had things like mosquito netting, a thousand blankets, three gallons of bug repellant ...

suki: Survival gear doesn't say anything personal.

bella: I should add a gun to my list in case I need to reinact Thelma and Louise at any point during my "escape."

(At this point, I tell her about how the screenwriter of Thelma and Louise was inspired to write the movie when an old man yelled, "I'd like to see you suck my dick," at her and she scared the shit out of him by walking up to his car window and saying, "I'd like to shoot you in the fucking face." This story is relevant to us for obvious reasons.)

What are five things you don't particularly like that everyone else seems to love?

bella: Mad Men, Twitter, Coachella (and other multi-day music festivals), Cosmopolitans, and the resurgence of nostalgic remakes and reboots.

suki: Wow. I like ... probably all of these.

bella: And yet we still mesh like ... something that meshes.
